Samsung SDI announced October 26, 2026, that its U.S. subsidiary agreed to supply Alpha Omega Power with 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of grid-scale batteries. Combined with a separate 2025 order, the developer has contracted 1.5 GWh. Delivery is planned by year-end 2026, ahead of projects expected to begin construction in 2027.
Key Takeaways
- The new 1 GWh contract raises the partners’ combined orders to 1.5 GWh.
- Samsung’s SBB 1.7 systems are intended for projects in ERCOT and WECC power markets.
- Contracted energy capacity does not establish installed output, commissioning dates or actual grid dispatch.
Indiana manufacturing for American power markets
The order covers the Samsung Battery Box (SBB) 1.7, a containerized energy storage system using nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) prismatic cells. Samsung says the cells and modules will come from the StarPlus Energy factory in Kokomo, Indiana. The company has not disclosed pricing, project locations or commissioning dates.

Alpha Omega Power plans projects across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) regions. Grid batteries can shift electricity across hours and help respond to variations in demand. That is relevant to Texas grid growth, but this contract alone does not establish how many megawatts can be discharged at once.
What the SBB 1.7 specification means
Samsung says SBB 1.7 stores about 17% more energy per 20-foot container than SBB 1.5. It also advertises anomaly monitoring, module-level fire-suppression technology and a 25-year design life. These are manufacturer specifications, not evidence of decades of measured operation. In a 2025 product launch, Samsung cited 6.14 MWh per SBB 1.7 unit.

The distinction between energy and power matters: GWh measures stored energy, whereas MW indicates a discharge rate. Actual duration depends on the project’s power conversion equipment and operating design. As previous BitcoinVersus coverage of battery economics explains, storage costs and grid value depend on more than nameplate energy capacity. For this order, delivery, construction and energization remain separate milestones.
