Apple unveiled a redesigned iPad mini on October 26 in Cupertino, California, replacing the compact tablet’s LCD with an 8.5-inch OLED screen and adding the A20 Pro chip, water resistance, and faster networking. U.S. preorders opened October 28, with retail availability set for November 6. The entry price rises to $699 for the Wi-Fi model, putting the smallest iPad into a more expensive category.

The new display fits inside a footprint close to the previous 8.3-inch model, helped by bezels Apple says are 24% thinner. The Super Retina XDR panel reaches up to 1,200 nits of peak HDR brightness and offers an optional nano-texture finish for glare reduction on select configurations. Apple still uses a 60Hz display rather than the 120Hz ProMotion technology offered on higher-end iPads, a limitation also noted in early hands-on coverage.

A20 Pro, Water Resistance, and Faster Connectivity

The chassis is 5.4 millimeters thick and gains an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. That certification covers controlled laboratory conditions, not an assurance against all liquid damage. The landscape-mounted 12-megapixel Center Stage camera and a new Acoustic Display speaker system also update the hardware for calls, media, and travel.

Apple says the 2-nanometer A20 Pro delivers up to 60% more multithreaded CPU performance, 2.7 times the graphics performance, and 4.5 times the AI performance of the previous generation in its testing. Those are vendor comparisons, not independent benchmark results. The company is also adding the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, plus a C2 modem in cellular versions.

The Price of a Smaller OLED iPad

Apple Pencil Pro remains compatible, and the tablet runs iPadOS 27 with Siri AI features in beta. The 128GB Wi-Fi model starts at $699, with Wi-Fi + Cellular beginning at $849; storage options extend to 512GB. Buyers considering the new iPhone Duo, Apple’s foldable phone, may see more overlap between Apple’s small-screen devices than before.

The unanswered question is value. OLED contrast, a brighter screen, upgraded internals, and water resistance strengthen the compact format, but the higher starting price and 60Hz refresh rate give buyers reasons to compare larger iPads. Apple’s simultaneous move into touchscreen Macs also raises questions about where its device lines increasingly intersect.

Real-world battery tests and independent display measurements after the November 6 release will be more revealing than Apple’s launch figures alone.
