Voith and GE Vernova to Upgrade Slovakia’s 735 MW Čierny Váh Hydro Plant

Slovakia’s Slovenské elektrárne announced October 27, 2026, that it signed three technology contracts with Voith Hydro and GE Vernova for the Čierny Váh pumped-storage plant. The project will modernize two generating-and-pumping units and add a large battery system, aiming to improve grid balancing by 2031.

The agreements cover about 80% of a €125 million contract package. The wider SE Integrátor investment exceeds €200 million; these are different cost scopes, not two amounts to add together. The European Union committed up to €62.63 million for the hydro modernization phase, not the entire battery installation.

Why Variable-Speed Equipment Matters

Operating since 1982, Čierny Váh has 735 MW of installed capacity. It pumps water uphill when electricity is available, then releases it through turbines during higher demand. Conventional fixed-speed pumping is comparatively inflexible; the new motor-generators and frequency converters are designed to adjust pumping power more precisely.

Voith will participate in turbine-and-pump modernization, while GE Vernova supplies critical electrical conversion technology. The operator says the upgraded units should offer faster frequency and balancing support without replacing all six pumped-storage units.

The existing 735 MW rating is not new generating capacity created by the contract. The larger gain is flexibility: how quickly and accurately the facility can consume or return electricity when solar, wind and other grid supply fluctuate.

Battery Specification Has Grown

The operator’s current design calls for up to 120 MW of batteries storing 480 MWh, equivalent to a theoretical four-hour discharge at rated power. An earlier EU briefing used 80 MW and 160 MWh; those figures have been superseded by the latest operator announcement. See our MW-versus-MWh guide for the difference between power and duration.

The battery remains a planned component: a new procurement notice seeks its engineering, installation and commissioning. It should not be reported as a functioning 120 MW asset.

What Happens Next

This is a different stage from Scotland’s proposed Earba pumped-hydro project and from already-operating American battery stations. Čierny Váh’s main test is whether retrofits, permits, procurement and commissioning deliver the intended grid services on schedule. The operator targets completion in 2031.
