The Early Case for NBA MVP: Wembanyama vs. Dončić and the Value of Defense

Sports Scouting Report | November 8, 2026

Luka Dončić is making an early case for historic offensive value. Victor Wembanyama could answer with historic production at both ends of the floor. The MVP debate may ultimately hinge on how the league measures defense.

The NBA’s first 2026–27 MVP Ladder, published November 6, ranked Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić first and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama second. Dončić has generated one of the season’s most extraordinary scoring stretches, but Wembanyama can alter an opponent’s possessions even when he never touches the ball.

The latest result adds context: on November 7, San Antonio beat Portland 125–103 behind 29 points from Wembanyama in just over 24 minutes. He finished with seven rebounds, three assists and one block. A per-game comparison must therefore identify its cutoff rather than silently mixing games played on different dates.

A historic offensive engine against a defensive anchor

Through his first nine games Dončić averaged 40.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists. Wembanyama’s earlier nine-game sample featured 29.1 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.2 blocks per game. Those figures illustrate different routes to value, but they are dated early-season snapshots, not the players’ live season averages after November 7.

Dončić produces efficient scoring opportunities through ball-screen control, shooting range, pace changes and exceptional passing. Wembanyama contributes as a scorer and rebounder while discouraging drives, protecting the rim and recovering to shots other centers cannot reach.

Victor Wembanyama scouting report

Strengths: Elite rim protection, massive defensive range, recovery mobility, rebounding, pick-and-roll finishing and improving perimeter offense. The Spurs can pressure the perimeter more aggressively with his help behind them. His deterrence matters beyond his block total because opponents may decline shots they would attempt against another center.

Weaknesses: Perimeter accuracy can fluctuate; stronger interior defenders can move him off preferred spots; ambitious shot selection occasionally reduces offensive efficiency. An MVP campaign also requires sustained health and minutes over a demanding season.

His signature November 4 performance against Dallas delivered 52 points, 24 rebounds and eight blocks in a 112–111 Spurs victory, confirmed by NBA reporting. Wembanyama shot 1-for-8 from three in that game, demonstrating how overwhelming interior value can coexist with an inefficient night from distance.

Luka Dončić scouting report

Strengths: Rare self-created scoring, step-back shooting, pace manipulation, body control, pick-and-roll mastery and cross-court passing. His offense demands double teams and forces defenses to choose between his scoring and opportunities for teammates.

Weaknesses: Quick guards may test his lateral movement in space; opponents can seek him on switches; occasional off-ball defensive lapses and exceptionally high offensive usage create trade-offs. Those are scouting considerations, not proof that he is always a negative defender.

Dončić scored 53 against Portland on November 6, furthering an extraordinary scoring run. Whether those outputs translate into the most valuable overall season depends on efficiency, availability, team success and his defensive contributions—not points alone.

What the Stephen Curry crossover actually tells us

An October 30 possession in which Stephen Curry put Dončić on the floor with a direction change became a vivid illustration of a possible defensive mismatch. One highlight is not a valid season-long defensive metric. Serious scouting must examine repeated matchups, opponent shot quality, team rotations and defensive on/off results, not a single memorable play.

Wembanyama’s defensive edge has a more systematic basis: his reach can protect the restricted area, discourage attempts and enable different coverages. But blocks alone are not comprehensive either. Team defensive rating, lineup-adjusted impact and opponent efficiency will be essential as the sample expands.

The MVP verdict

Dončić deserves the early offensive lead. Wembanyama offers the stronger hypothetical route to an MVP-and-Defensive-Player-of-the-Year double: near-30-point scoring alongside elite rim protection. Winning DPOY would not automatically prove he is MVP, and no defensive award is assured in November.

The central distinction is that Dončić dominates with the basketball, while Wembanyama can dominate without it. If the Spurs sustain winning basketball and Wembanyama maintains elite production on both ends, the two-way argument could overtake even a historically productive scorer.
