The Final Four: Ethereum’s Pre-Merge PEI Analysis

Ethereum’s final four years as a proof-of-work network provide a clean historical window for a Power Efficiency Index analysis.

From 2018 through September 14, 2022, Ethereum still depended on mining hardware, network compute, and measurable energy efficiency.

Its 2018 physical price was approximately $82.83, giving the PEI model a clear starting point.

Over the following four years, Ethereum’s rate of compute expanded substantially as more mining hardware joined the network. At the same time, Ethash mining equipment became far more energy efficient.

The hardware progression was especially important to Ethereum’s PEI reading. Early Ethash miners such as the Antminer E3 operated near 4.44 J/MH, while later-generation Jasminer hardware approached roughly 0.46 J/MH before the Merge.

That represents close to a 9.6× improvement in mining energy efficiency over the period. When that improvement is combined with the increase in network compute, Ethereum’s compounded power-efficiency progression reaches roughly 33×.

Applying that progression to the 2018 physical price produces a preliminary pre-Merge PEI value near $2,750 per ETH.

Ethereum’s actual market price near the Merge was approximately $1,472, while its 2022 physical price was roughly $896.

Both figures remained well below the modeled PEI reading at the end of the proof-of-work era. The shaded divergence in the chart represents the widening gap between Ethereum’s physical-price progression and its measured power-efficiency progression.

Under this framework, PEI suggests Ethereum entered the Merge meaningfully undervalued relative to the compute and energy-efficiency gains achieved by its mining network.

September 14, 2022 marks the end of the measurement because Ethereum’s move to proof of stake removed mining hashrate and ASIC efficiency from the system entirely.
