Boston Dynamics Opens Atlas Factory Training Center

Boston Dynamics has opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia, giving Atlas humanoid robots a dedicated facility for learning automotive manufacturing work in a real factory environment.

The center, known as RMAC, is operational. Atlas robots are training on logistics and parts-sequencing tasks using automotive components, fixtures and work cells. The robots prepare parts and place them in the order required for assembly, allowing engineers to collect manufacturing data while testing humanoid hardware and software around production equipment.

The work moves Atlas from limited demonstrations toward a repeatable factory training process. Boston Dynamics describes RMAC as a testbed for integrating Atlas into Hyundai Motor Group manufacturing. Component assembly is targeted for 2030, while later applications could include repetitive motions and physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy loads.

Industrial humanoids must reliably interact with racks, packaging, fixtures and parts designed around human workers. Building useful manipulation policies requires data from production environments, while manufacturers may also need to adapt surrounding equipment so robots can perform tasks consistently at production speed.

Boston Dynamics plans to move RMAC into a new building at the Georgia Metaplant in 2027. The company says the replacement facility will be approximately ten times the size of the current center. It also plans to explore Atlas applications with existing Spot and Stretch customers in aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage and life sciences.

Hyundai Motor Group has outlined a larger commercialization plan. Boston Dynamics says the group intends to deploy 25,000 Atlas robots across Hyundai and Kia plants over the next several years and establish a U.S. production facility capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually. Those figures are deployment and production-capacity plans, not the number of robots currently operating at RMAC.
