gFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek unveiled a Wi-Fi 8 router on October 12 that can run AI directly inside the home network. The new gFiber Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway is being shown at Network X 2026 and is built for gFiber’s symmetrical 20 Gig service.
Qualcomm says the gateway uses its Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite platform, combining concurrent quad-band Wi-Fi 8, a penta-core CPU and a Hexagon NPU. The companies say that local AI can handle tasks such as natural-language parental controls, guest access and real-time network diagnostics without sending every request to the cloud.
This is not just a faster version of the first Wi-Fi 8 hardware already appearing in the market. The bigger change is that the router is becoming a small edge computer. That builds on the basics of how Wi-Fi moves data inside a local network and the distinction between Wi-Fi and the internet connection itself.
Existing gFiber 20 Gig customers are expected to get the new gateway first once certification is complete. The underlying hardware is also intended to support future 50 Gig service, and gFiber says it plans a residential 50G trial in spring 2027. Those are roadmap claims, not current consumer availability.
