SunHydrogen said on October 13, 2026 that small-scale versions of its hydrogen panel reached 12.3% active-area solar-to-hydrogen efficiency in laboratory testing at Honda R&D in Japan. The result is up from 10.8% previously validated by Honda and comes from a new cell layout developed with CTF Solar.
The idea is unusually simple to describe: use sunlight and water to make hydrogen directly. SunHydrogen’s October 13 update says its photoelectrochemical system splits water without requiring a separate grid-powered electrolyzer. Four newer modules have also operated for two weeks at the Hydrogen ProtoHub in Austin, Texas, under real outdoor conditions.

The biggest limitation is scale. The 12.3% figure is a small-scale laboratory result, not the efficiency of the full-size Austin panels. An independent summary from Stock Titan likewise notes that transferring the gain to larger prototypes is the next engineering step.
SunHydrogen’s earlier 1 m² demonstration shows the physical panel technology producing hydrogen outdoors.
The development sits at the intersection of solar-fuel materials, the broader distinction between clean and renewable energy, and efforts to build off-grid power systems. If the efficiency survives scale-up, panels like these could eventually generate hydrogen near where it is consumed instead of producing electricity first and moving hydrogen long distances.
