Scaleway Plans AMD AI Supercomputer in Sweden

Scaleway is expanding its AI infrastructure into Sweden with a new AMD-powered supercomputer built around Instinct MI355X accelerators.

The French cloud provider announced the project Tuesday, October 13, during its ai-PULSE conference in Paris. Reuters reported that the system will be Scaleway’s first AI supercomputer outside France and, according to Scaleway, the first AMD-based commercial AI supercomputer of its kind offered in Europe. The company plans to make the machine available to startups, AI companies and other businesses across the continent.

The move adds another large European deployment to a market that has been dominated by NVIDIA hardware. It also gives AMD a highly visible commercial showcase for its Instinct platform at a time when cloud providers are looking for more accelerator choices. BitcoinVersus.Tech has been tracking the same shift through AMD’s broader rack-scale push and Europe’s effort to expand domestic supercomputing capacity.

The hardware matters because the MI355X is designed for dense AI and high-performance computing systems. AMD lists 288 GB of HBM3E memory per accelerator, up to 8 TB/s of peak memory bandwidth and a 1,400-watt typical board power rating. Those numbers explain why systems built around the chip need serious power delivery and liquid-cooling infrastructure rather than simply dropping more GPUs into conventional air-cooled racks.

AMD has previously highlighted production AI infrastructure using Instinct MI355X accelerators.

That infrastructure requirement is part of the larger AI data-center story. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered HPE’s $1.2 billion Vultr order for AMD Helios AI racks, another example of AMD moving from individual accelerators toward complete high-density platforms.

Software will matter just as much as hardware. Scaleway plans to use AMD’s ROCm software stack, which gives developers another path for training and inference beyond CUDA-centered environments. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously looked at ROCm running AI workloads on a SiFive RISC-V data-center server, showing how AMD is pushing the software layer into a wider set of architectures.

Sweden also fits the power side of the project. The country has a large supply of low-carbon electricity and a cool climate that can help reduce cooling overhead for dense computing infrastructure. Scaleway entered the Swedish market earlier in 2026 through a partnership with Tele2, making the supercomputer a logical next step rather than an isolated deployment.

The project will also involve Bull for system construction and maintenance, while Giga Computing, HPE, VAST Data and Motul are contributing server, networking, storage and cooling technologies, according to Reuters.

For Europe, the significance is choice. A commercial AI supercomputer based on MI355X gives customers another large-scale accelerator platform while keeping the infrastructure inside Europe. For AMD, it is another opportunity to prove that Instinct and ROCm can compete not only in benchmark results, but in real cloud infrastructure serving paying customers.
