NuScale and Doosan Begin Manufacturing Key SMR Reactor Component

NuScale Power and Doosan Enerbility signed a manufacturing contract on October 29, 2026, in Changwon, South Korea, for the first upper reactor coolant-system article of NuScale’s small modular reactor. The work moves a long-running partnership from material preparation into fabrication of a major reactor component.

Doosan will manufacture the upper section of the reactor pressure vessel, equipment designed to contain coolant under high temperature and pressure. Neither company announced a contract value or a delivery date, and the agreement does not mean a complete reactor has entered service.

From Approved Design to Fabricated Hardware

The companies began collaborating in 2019 and contracted for manufacturing materials in 2023. Their latest agreement calls for a first article—a component produced to establish manufacturing readiness and conformity before repeat production. NuScale chief executive John Hopkins described the step as converting an approved design into deliverable modules.

At the ceremony, NuScale chief operating officer Carl Fisher joined Jongdoo Kim, head of Doosan’s nuclear business, who said the project is moving from technical validation toward actual manufacturing.

What the 77 MW Reactor Actually Contains

NuScale’s pressurized-water module is rated for 77 megawatts of electrical output and 250 megawatts of thermal power. Up to 12 modules could theoretically provide 924 MW of electric generating capacity in a plant configuration. These are design ratings, not electricity currently being supplied to customers.

A 2025 U.S. nuclear regulatory approval covered the uprated 77 MW design; individual projects still require site-specific approvals, financing and construction. Our earlier explainer, Are SMRs Available Yet?, examines that distinction.

Why Manufacturing Matters for AI Power

NuScale’s official Normal System Operation animation explains the reactor’s coolant circulation; it is not evidence of an operating commercial NuScale plant.

Large-scale production depends on certified suppliers, specialized heavy forgings and repeatable quality-control processes. Manufacturing a first component tests part of that chain, but cannot by itself establish the total cost or timeline of a commercial nuclear station.

The development follows other nuclear infrastructure efforts, including Westinghouse’s fuel-factory expansion, proposed reactor uprates and an Amazon-linked SMR development. These projects are at different regulatory and commercial stages.

For AI campuses seeking dependable power, NuScale’s scalable model is attractive in principle. But equipment qualification, enforceable customer orders, financing and on-site licensing remain the milestones that will distinguish an industrial achievement from a functioning power plant.
