AEP and X-energy Explore 960 MW Indiana Nuclear Plant With Amazon Funding

October 24, 2026 — Indiana. American Electric Power (AEP) and reactor developer X-energy announced on October 19 an agreement to study a proposed 960-megawatt nuclear facility in Sullivan County. Amazon confirms it is providing project development funding, while X-energy describes the support as milestone-based development capital. The announcement starts feasibility work; it is not a construction approval.

  • 12 planned Xe-100 reactors, each designed for 80 MW.
  • Location: former Breed Generating Station coal plant site in Sullivan County, Indiana.
  • Status: preliminary development and site evaluation, with no final investment decision or announced operation date.

From Retired Coal Site to Proposed Nuclear Generation

The plan would arrange the 12 high-temperature, helium-cooled reactors in three groups of four. Their combined 960 MW is proposed generating capacity, not electricity currently supplied to the grid. X-energy’s Xe-100 design uses coated TRISO fuel and remains subject to nuclear licensing and commercial deployment steps.

AEP says it would own and operate the plant if it proceeds. The electricity would feed the regional power network, rather than run solely behind a data-center fence. Amazon intends to buy power through a long-term contract designed to cover facility and operating costs. The companies have not provided a final construction budget.

What Remains Unresolved

The utility’s project page identifies site engineering, environmental reviews, public engagement, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing, PJM grid-interconnection approval and financing as remaining steps. These are multi-year processes. Jobs, lower-cost electricity and other regional benefits are projections, not demonstrated outcomes.

The project adds a second major initiative to the Amazon–X-energy collaboration, which targets more than 5 GW of U.S. nuclear capacity by 2039. That portfolio target is also a development goal, not deployed generation.

For context, BitcoinVersus.Tech previously examined Amazon’s original partnership with X-energy, whether commercial SMRs are available, and why capacity is not the same as annual generation. The key milestone to watch now is a funded, licensed construction decision.
