Victoria has granted state planning permits for the proposed 420-megawatt Moreton Hill Wind Farm, about 35 kilometres southwest of Ballarat in southeastern Australia. The Victorian planning register dates the decision to October 30. Developer Squadron Energy announced the milestone on November 3 and said Commonwealth environmental consent was still pending.
Onshore wind turbines use moving air to turn a rotor that drives a generator. The electrical output rises or falls with wind conditions, and equipment availability and grid limits can also affect how much energy reaches customers. The 420 MW figure describes the project’s proposed generating capacity. Over a year, the energy actually delivered would be measured in megawatt-hours. The distinction also matters at operating projects such as the Philippines’ Alabat Wind Farm, where initial commissioning brought only part of the planned capacity online.
An underground connection to Berrybank
Squadron proposes up to 62 turbines near Pittong on Wadawurrung Country, across the Corangamite and Golden Plains shires. The developer plans to carry electricity to the Berrybank terminal station roughly nine kilometres south of the wind farm through an underground 220-kilovolt line. The voltage describes the proposed connection, while the wind farm’s megawatt rating describes how much power the turbines are designed to produce under rated conditions.

A separate planning application for Berrybank describes a new line bay, a control building and an extension of the switchyard. The station work would connect the project to Australia’s National Electricity Market. Planning for the cable and station shows why grid connection can follow a separate timeline from building a generating site. The 420 MW proposal also belongs in the context of global wind capacity growth, where figures for installed equipment and actual production answer different questions.
The Corangamite permit record also describes a battery energy storage system. Its power and energy ratings are separate from the wind farm’s proposed 420 MW, which refers to generation.
Federal environmental decision still ahead
Squadron estimates annual generation equivalent to the electricity use of about 260,000 homes and projects nearly 350,000 tonnes of avoided emissions per year. The household figure is a comparison of energy over time. The emissions estimate depends in part on which generation wind power would displace. Actual output and its timing would determine how the project contributes to the grid, alongside flexible resources such as pumped hydropower.
Victoria’s environmental assessment record includes studies on noise, ecology and visual impacts. The developer says the environment report went on public exhibition in July, with permit applications also made available for public review. State approval advances the project through one part of the process. The federal project register lists Moreton Hill as under assessment. A Commonwealth decision and progress on the Berrybank connection are the next milestones to watch.
