Ionic Digital’s cryptocurrency mining revenue collapsed 86.3% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, while leasing formerly mining-focused infrastructure to computing customers supplied almost 90% of its sales. The company reported $5.082 million in mining revenue, down from $37.096 million a year earlier. Its November 4 earnings disclosure placed digital infrastructure leasing revenue at $43.884 million out of $48.989 million in total revenue.
The shift reflects an increasingly common business decision among industrial Bitcoin miners. Proof-of-work mining uses specialized ASIC machines to compete for block subsidies and transaction fees; earnings depend on Bitcoin prices, network difficulty, electricity and equipment efficiency. A long-term data-center lease instead monetizes power connections and buildings, but introduces tenant concentration, construction and financing risks. BitcoinVersus.Tech has reported a similar revenue transition at TeraWulf.

Leasing replaces Bitcoin as the principal revenue source
Ionic decommissioned its Ward County, Texas, Bitcoin mining equipment in December 2025 to repurpose the property for Nscale’s high-performance computing operations. Mining activity continues at smaller Midland-area sites. A related BitcoinVersus.Tech report covered Core Scientific’s planned exit from Bitcoin mining, illustrating the wider competition for powered data-center space.
The SEC-filed earnings exhibit shows digital infrastructure leasing contributed 89.6% of total quarterly revenue. Overall sales grew approximately 32.1% year over year despite the steep drop in Bitcoin mining income. Other revenue totaled only $23,000.

Cash receipts trail reported leasing revenue
A crucial accounting distinction separates recognized sales from cash collected. Ionic recognized $43.884 million of third-quarter lease revenue under accrual accounting, but described only approximately $7 million of lease revenue on a cash basis. Rent payments started in August and are scheduled to rise through early 2028. The reported accounting revenue should not be treated as $43.884 million of quarterly cash inflow.
The company reported approximately $17.4 million of net income, including a $73.2 million noncash cryptocurrency fair-value gain and a $65.9 million noncash warrant revaluation charge. Adjusted EBITDA was approximately $35 million, but the non-GAAP measure does not substitute for cash flow or net earnings.

A 466 MW expansion still needs final clearance
The existing Ward County lease covers 234 gross MW of energized capacity, with another 89 gross MW contracted for anticipated delivery in late 2027. An additional 377 gross MW remains available for potential customers. The full 466 MW expansion received provisional classification in ERCOT’s Batch Zero process, not final authorization or energization. Completion depends on utility infrastructure and regulatory review. Earlier BitcoinVersus.Tech reporting examined Texas large-load and mining regulations.
Ionic held 2,954 BTC and $381 million in cash at September 30, with no outstanding borrowings. After quarter-end it sold 737 BTC for about $62 million, lowering holdings to 2,217 BTC. Unlike Keel’s larger reported Bitcoin liquidation, Ionic still held a substantial coin balance following its sale. Both illustrate how cryptocurrency reserves can finance infrastructure investments.
The immediate operating achievement is a new lease-heavy revenue mix, not a completed 700 MW computing campus. Tenant execution, electricity interconnection, cash-rent timing and future construction costs will determine whether Ionic converts its power pipeline into sustained cash generation.
Editor’s Note: Figures were verified against Ionic Digital’s November 4, 2026 earnings release, the SEC Exhibit 99.1, the SEC Form 8-K and the company’s third-quarter investor presentation. Percent changes were recalculated from unrounded figures. The 466 MW Ward County expansion remains provisional.
