SiPearl Rhea1 CPUs Enter JUPITER Supercomputer

SiPearl has delivered the first samples of its Rhea1 processor to Bull, moving the European-designed server CPU from laboratory validation into integration for the JUPITER exascale supercomputer.

Bull says it has begun integrating Rhea1 into the BullSequana XH3000 platform used for JUPITER’s CPU-based Cluster Module at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre in Germany. The CPU module complements JUPITER’s GPU-based Booster and is intended for complex, data-intensive workloads.

Rhea1 contains 80 Arm Neoverse V1 cores, four stacks of high-bandwidth memory and four DDR5 interfaces. Each core includes two 256-bit Scalable Vector Extension engines. SiPearl says the chip contains 61 billion transistors and is manufactured on TSMC’s 6 nm process.

The JUPITER shipment is SiPearl’s first Rhea1 order and its first significant revenue from the processor, according to the companies. SiPearl says early internal benchmarking has been encouraging, but consolidated performance figures have not yet been published. Until those results are released and independently evaluated, performance claims remain preliminary.

The delivery is a concrete step in Europe’s effort to build more of its own high-performance computing hardware. JUPITER is designed as a modular system, allowing the Rhea1 CPU cluster to work alongside accelerated computing resources rather than replacing the GPU partition.
