A $1 billion fusion campus is rising in the New Mexico desert around a machine designed to cross one of fusion energy’s most important remaining thresholds.
Pacific Fusion has broken ground on a roughly 225,000-square-foot research and manufacturing campus at Mesa del Sol in Albuquerque. Its centerpiece will be the company’s Demonstration System, a pulsed-power fusion machine targeting net facility gain by 2030.
The target is bigger than fusion ignition
Pacific Fusion’s groundbreaking announcement says the Demonstration System is designed to produce more fusion energy than the total energy initially stored in the machine. The company calls that threshold net facility gain.
That distinction matters. Researchers have already demonstrated fusion reactions that release more energy than reaches the fuel target, but an experimental facility still consumes much more energy overall. Pacific Fusion is trying to move the accounting boundary outward toward the complete machine.
Instead of giant magnets or lasers, Pacific Fusion uses electrical pulses
Pacific Fusion is pursuing pulsed magnetic fusion. Its architecture uses short, extremely powerful electrical pulses to create magnetic fields that compress a fuel target toward fusion conditions.
The company’s manufacturing strategy is modular: build repeated pulsed-power units, validate them individually and combine many of them around the fusion chamber. That is meant to turn an exotic physics machine into something that can eventually be manufactured more like industrial equipment.
The approach is very different from the long-duration magnetic confinement used in tokamaks. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously covered how France’s WEST tokamak held plasma for 1,337 seconds, showing another route researchers are taking toward useful fusion energy.
The machine is also being built for high-yield fusion research
The Demonstration System has a second mission beyond commercial-energy research. Pacific Fusion says it is designed to generate fusion bursts exceeding 100 megajoules for high-energy-density science.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration confirmed a formal collaboration framework with Pacific Fusion covering high-yield fusion, pulsed-power technology, advanced materials, modeling and related research. The agreement gives the project a national-laboratory and national-security dimension in addition to its commercial-energy ambitions.
New Mexico is becoming an advanced-energy construction site
The Albuquerque campus is expected to support about 200 permanent jobs plus construction and supply-chain work. Pacific Fusion is also expanding manufacturing in nearby Los Lunas for modular pulsed-power components.
The project arrives as electricity demand from computing is pushing nearly every advanced generation technology back into the conversation. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently reported that Amazon’s 20-year nuclear agreement is supporting a 190 MW uprate at Calvert Cliffs, while smaller systems are moving toward physical testing too: Deployable Energy’s 1 MW nuclear battery is headed toward a full-power DOME test.
A groundbreaking is not a fusion breakthrough
The engineering risk remains enormous. Pacific Fusion has not demonstrated net facility gain, and the Albuquerque machine will not automatically become a commercial power plant if it reaches that target. A practical plant would still need reliable repetition, maintainable components, fuel handling, heat conversion and economics that compete with other power sources.
But the physical construction matters because fusion companies are moving beyond laboratory components into full-scale systems. Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023. Three years later, it is pouring real capital into a machine intended to test whether its pulsed-power architecture can cross a threshold no complete fusion facility has crossed before.
If the Demonstration System works as intended, the headline will not simply be that fusion happened. It will be that the machine as a whole moved closer to producing more fusion energy than it had stored to make the reaction happen.
