OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a single-user assistant into a shared workspace for people and agents. At DevDay 2026, the company introduced ChatGPT Space, a collaborative environment where files, Pages, teammates and AI agents can work from the same project context. OpenAI’s DevDay recap describes Space as a place where teams can keep shared files and work products together while agents operate alongside them.
The shift matters because agentic AI has been moving beyond one-shot chat sessions. A useful work agent needs persistent context, access to the same materials a team uses, and a place where humans can review or change what the agent produces. Space is OpenAI’s attempt to make that shared context a first-class part of ChatGPT rather than something scattered across separate chats and external tools.
ChatGPT introduced Space on X as a workspace where teams and Dots can collaborate around shared files and Pages. The announcement places Space alongside Pages, collaborative slides, meeting tools, plug-ins and Dots, OpenAI’s always-on personal agents.
Space Is More Than Another Folder
Traditional cloud drives store files. ChatGPT Space is designed to make those files active inputs to ongoing AI work. A team can keep documents, Pages and shared context in one place, then let agents read from that environment and update work products as tasks progress.
TechCrunch reported that OpenAI is positioning Space alongside Pages and collaborative slides in a way that increasingly resembles an office-software suite. The distinction is that agents are not bolted onto the side of the workspace; they are meant to participate inside it.
Persistent Agents Need Persistent Context
BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered OpenAI’s Dots as always-on agents that can work across applications. Space gives that model a shared home: rather than an agent continuously operating against fragmented app state, it can work from a common project environment that teammates can also inspect.
The same trend is showing up in developer tools. Claude Code’s new Mods can change agent behavior and interface from inside the coding environment, pushing coding agents toward more configurable, persistent workspaces rather than isolated prompts.
And the coordination problem is getting larger. BitcoinVersus.Tech also examined Jeff Dean’s viral discussion of 100-agent orchestration. Once many agents are operating at the same time, shared project state, permissions, review surfaces and human visibility become infrastructure rather than convenience features.
ChatGPT Space is therefore less about adding another productivity tab and more about changing the unit of AI work. The basic object is no longer one conversation between one person and one model. It is a shared environment where people, files and agents can keep working on the same problem over time.
