How Cloudflare Protects APIs With Schema Validation

Cybersecurity engineers monitoring API traffic through a protected cloud security system.

Cloudflare’s latest security work puts renewed attention on how organizations protect the application programming interfaces (APIs) that connect websites, mobile apps and backend services. API protection depends on knowing which endpoints exist, what requests they accept and whether incoming traffic behaves as expected.

Schema learning is one way to build that picture. By observing API traffic, security teams can identify expected request structures and compare later requests against those patterns. But a learned schema is not automatically proof that an API is secure: an attacker can still send valid-looking requests or exploit authorization mistakes.

Cloudflare’s API Shield documentation describes API discovery and schema validation as tools for understanding and protecting API traffic. Its Web Application Firewall documentation explains another layer of request filtering.

For context, BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered Cloudflare’s new WAF detections, as well as reverse proxies and HTTPS and TLS.

The practical distinction is important: traffic inspection can reduce exposure, but patching vulnerable software, checking authentication and enforcing per-user authorization remain necessary. This is an explanation of Cloudflare’s documented API-security capabilities, not confirmation of a newly released feature today.
