Hackers remotely disrupted refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets across France, forcing stores to discard fresh and frozen food after refrigerators and freezers were pushed into defrost conditions.
BBC News reported that major French grocery chains were affected, including Intermarché and Coopérative U. Reuters separately reported temperatures in some refrigeration systems rising as high as 50°C (122°F), with food losses and fires reported at affected locations.
The Attack Reached the Physical World
This was not simply a website outage or stolen-data incident. The attackers reportedly manipulated operational technology that controls supermarket refrigeration. That makes the event closer to an industrial-control-system attack than a typical retail breach. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered AI testing against SCADA systems, explained the difference between HMI and SCADA, and reviewed how Modbus and monitoring controls connect physical infrastructure to software.
Older Refrigeration Controllers Are Under Scrutiny
The refrigeration systems at the center of the investigation use Danfoss control equipment. Danfoss has previously published security advisories for the AK-SM 8xxA family, including an authentication-bypass flaw, and has repeatedly advised customers to keep supported systems on current firmware. Its 2025 security advisory says versions before 4.2 were affected by CVE-2025-41450.
That does not establish which vulnerability the attackers used. Public reporting has not yet identified a confirmed intrusion path, and no responsible attacker has been publicly established. France’s national cybersecurity agency ANSSI and the Paris prosecutor’s office are investigating.
The incident is a practical warning about internet-connected operational technology: when software controls temperature, power, pumps or other physical processes, a cyberattack can damage inventory and equipment even when no customer database is touched.
