Ford Motor Company said October 27, 2026, that its upcoming 2027 Fathom electric pickup will house a bidirectional power inverter inside the vehicle, avoiding the separate wall-mounted inverter needed by earlier Ford home-backup systems. The truck is advertised from $28,350 MSRP and is projected to deliver more than 10 kilowatts of alternating-current power. Neither its customer installations nor the claimed output have yet been independently measured in production vehicles.
Ford Motor Company — “All-New Ford Fathom: The Midsize Electric Truck Built to Fit Your Life” (August 6, 2026). Official Ford launch footage confirms the truck and its platform, but predates the October bidirectional-power details.
The inverter moves into the truck
An EV battery stores direct-current energy, but household circuits use alternating current. Ford’s new E-box integrates the conversion equipment within the truck, one of five principal modules in its Universal EV Platform. Ford’s engineering explanation distinguishes this design from the former F-150 Lightning, which depended on external conversion hardware. The new truck still needs compatible equipment installed at home.

Ford offers two proposed configurations: Home Power Management would shift electricity between the battery and home during different utility-rate periods; Home Backup Power would add an isolation/backup panel to supply the home during outages. The company estimates its new management station will cost about 50% less than its earlier charger and its backup hardware package at least 60% less than its predecessor. Final purchase and installation prices remain unpublished.

Output, runtime and electrical safety
The distinction between power and energy matters. Ten kilowatts describes an instantaneous output rate; battery capacity in kilowatt-hours, household loads and reserve settings determine how long a truck could supply electricity. Ford has not released a verified Fathom-specific household runtime, so no number of outage days can be guaranteed.
State of Charge — “Watch How Ford Lightning’s Intelligent Backup Power System Works In A Real Home” (January 17, 2023). A firsthand demonstration of the older F-150 Lightning setup, presented for comparison; it is not a working Fathom installation.
Ford says the platform is designed around UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 interconnection requirements, using SAE J3068 communications. Its utility group includes AEP, BC Hydro, Consumers Energy, Exelon and PG&E. Meeting design objectives does not itself establish completed certification or approval by every utility. The approach resembles wider vehicle-to-grid efforts and virtual power plants, though Fathom’s utility exports remain planned.
A promised 2027 rollout
Ford’s advertised base price also excludes $1,595 destination and delivery, raising the pre-tax, pre-option vehicle total to $29,945. The company expects preorders in early 2027, with availability later that year. Its manufacturing roadmap follows other lower-cost EV platform initiatives and electrification technologies such as wireless truck charging research.
Ford Motor Company — “Louisville Assembly Plant | On Track for Ford Fathom Launch” (August 13, 2026). Official factory-retooling footage showing the Universal EV production program; it does not verify 2027 delivery or 10-kW home-backup output.
What comes next is real production testing, published charging-station prices, electrician installation estimates and utility-specific authorization. Ford’s projected 10-kW-plus output is a meaningful design target, but owners cannot assume a $28,350 truck alone is a turnkey whole-home power system.
