Hut 8’s 1 GW Beacon Point AI data center in Nueces County, Texas, has received a conditional Base Load classification in ERCOT’s Batch Zero process, preserving a critical path toward energizing one of the largest power-backed AI campuses being developed by a company with roots in Bitcoin mining.
The regulatory step is significant because Texas temporarily froze parts of the large-load interconnection process while state officials reviewed the rapidly expanding data-center queue. BitcoinVersus.tech has been tracking that pressure through the Texas data-center permit freeze and the broader shift of mining megawatts toward AI.
Beacon Point clears a key Texas power checkpoint
The company said the conditional Base Load classification is a step forward in Beacon Point’s energization process and that it continues working with its transmission and distribution service provider, ERCOT, regulators and local stakeholders. Independent reporting dated September 8 says ERCOT informed Hut 8’s transmission provider that megawatts previously studied and allocated to Beacon Point remain allocated to the project.
That distinction matters in a grid queue measured in hundreds of gigawatts. Conditional classification is not the same thing as a finished, energized data center, but it reduces uncertainty around the power allocation underlying Hut 8’s development schedule.
One gigawatt of utility capacity backs 704 MW of contracted IT load
Beacon Point has 1,000 MW of utility capacity under an interconnection agreement with AEP Texas. Hut 8 has signed two 15-year leases totaling 704 MW of critical IT capacity at the campus. In the underlying project disclosure, the two leases carry approximately $19.6 billion of aggregate base-term contract value.
The campus is designed around NVIDIA’s DSX reference architecture. BitcoinVersus.tech recently covered NVIDIA DSX Ready infrastructure and Vertiv’s 2.3 MW liquid-cooling platform.
Bitcoin mining’s power-first playbook is visible here
Hut 8’s development strategy grew out of experience securing power and building industrial-scale Bitcoin infrastructure. Its corporate materials describe Beacon Point as a site originally secured on an ASIC-compute thesis before being repositioned for hyperscale AI. The crossover is also visible in Soluna’s mining-to-AI expansion and Atlantic HPC’s mining and HPC platform.
BitcoinVersus.tech also reported Hut 8’s $140 million winning bid for Poolin Texas data centers and its support for tighter Texas data-center standards.
