Bitdeer’s SEAL04 chip test has reignited a question central to BitcoinVersus.Tech’s Power/Efficiency Theory: how far can SHA-256 mining hardware reduce joules per terahash before architecture, manufacturing and system overheads slow the curve? This report connects the earliest SEAL03 coverage with subsequent PEI research rather than treating a chip test as a shipping machine specification.
Background: From the First SEAL Chip to Power/Efficiency Theory
Bitdeer’s roadmap began with SEAL01 at 18.1 J/TH in early 2024, moved to SEAL02 at 13.5 J/TH later that year, and reached SEAL03 at 9.7 J/TH in 2025. BitcoinVersus.Tech documented the first SEAL03 testing coverage and its later SEAL03 efficiency reporting. Bitdeer’s original roadmap records the subsequent SEAL04 chip target at 6–7 J/TH.
The Power/Efficiency Theory 8.3% scenario was a slower-growth alternative to the site’s more aggressive 2033 projection. Earlier research asked how long until 1 J/TH, explained why longer observation windows matter, and analyzed the 2046 threshold scenario. These studies are related but use different assumptions and should not be presented as a single measured trend.
Original Power/Efficiency Discussion on X
The following post from the BitcoinVersus research account sets out the 8.3% annual-reduction hypothesis. It is included as an original research statement, not independent validation of the forecast.

In a separate earlier research statement, @VersusInstitute discussed whether physical compute efficiency could take another 50 years to approach its limits. That statement is a hypothesis about physical computation, not a demonstrated date for 1 J/TH ASIC mining.

What Changed in 2026?
Bitdeer’s December 2025 operational disclosure described SEAL04-1 verification at 6–7 J/TH only under low-voltage, ultra-power-saving chip-test conditions. Its April 2026 A4 launch specified a complete Ultra Hydro miner at 9.45 J/TH. The manufacturer’s A4 product page adds that final performance can vary by 5% in efficiency. Those are three distinct evidence types: test mode, published machine specification, and delivered-machine tolerances.
What Bitdeer Actually Measured
Bitdeer reported that its SEAL04-1 silicon achieved approximately 6–7 J/TH at chip level in a low-voltage, ultra-power-saving mode. Its A4 Ultra Hydro, which integrates SEAL04 chips, is specified at 9.45 J/TH, 886 TH/s and 8,372.7 W at machine level. The difference is important: controllers, conversion losses, operating points and other system demands separate chip results from wall-power performance. Compare the original 2025 SEAL03 9.7 J/TH result, the SEAL04 chip-level versus wall-level analysis, and the 2026 machine efficiency ranking.
Primary disclosures: Bitdeer’s SEAL04-1 chip verification, official SEALMINER roadmap, and A4 product specifications. The roadmap lists SEAL01 at 18.1 J/TH, SEAL02 at 13.5 J/TH, SEAL03 at 9.7 J/TH and SEAL04 at 6–7 J/TH, but those values should not be mistaken for comparable complete-machine measurements.
The 26.97% Efficiency Reduction
Using 8.9 J/TH as a production-machine reference and 6.5 J/TH as the midpoint of SEAL04’s reported chip range, (8.9 − 6.5) ÷ 8.9 = 26.97% less energy per terahash. Inverse efficiency, hashes per joule, rises by (8.9 ÷ 6.5 − 1) × 100 = 36.92%. This is an illustrative cross-category comparison, not a controlled year-over-year measurement of identical hardware. See 2026 machine efficiency ranking and Architecture limits and the 2033–2046 window for the underlying architecture question.
From 2033 to 2046 and Beyond
A constant 26.97% annual reduction from 6.5 J/TH would mathematically cross 1 J/TH around 2032–2033. At 20% the threshold arrives around 2035; at 15%, around 2038; and at 8.3%, around 2048. These are compound-rate scenarios, not manufacturing forecasts. The existing 1 J/TH by 2033 scenario, How long until 1 J/TH? and 8.3% singularity scenario explain how assumed annual reduction rates change the timeline.
A decelerating curve may be more realistic as voltage margins, leakage, interconnect parasitics, memory/control overhead, thermal management and chip economics constrain further gains. Historical progression also depends on the chosen starting point and time window. The measurement boundary deserves equal weight in any long-run projection. See our earlier nameplate versus wall-power J/TH explanation, ASIC versus whole-site efficiency analysis, and electricity-cost worked examples. These reports explain why an ultra-low-voltage chip test should not be extrapolated directly into facility energy savings.

What Must Improve at the Machine Level?
A 1 J/TH wall-powered machine would require improvements beyond chip switching energy: voltage regulation, PSU conversion, hashboard distribution, thermal stability, silicon yield and potentially new logic or packaging architectures. Compare Bitcoin ASIC architecture comparison with the earlier Architecture limits and the 2033–2046 window. At 1 PH/s, 1 J/TH corresponds to 1 kW of electrical input by definition; at 10 PH/s it corresponds to 10 kW, excluding additional facility overhead.
What Would Validate the Forecast?
- Independent, repeatable chip measurements at disclosed voltage, frequency and temperature.
- Production-machine measurements at the wall across sustained workloads.
- Documented shipment volume, yield, operating life and reliability.
- Consistent efficiency comparisons across air, hydro and immersion designs.
- Updated decay models that separate observed results from extrapolation.
Efficiency advances matter for mining economics, but they do not by themselves establish future Bitcoin prices or adoption. Our Bitcoin mining and hyperbitcoinization hypothesis examines one speculative implication and should be read as a hypothesis, not a prediction.
